The Bonette road tops out at 2,802 metres, on the loop around the Cime de la Bonette, in the Alpes-Maritimes. From the Ubaye valley starting in Jausiers, or from the Tinée valley starting in Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, each side tells of a long, demanding and solitary climb through some of the wildest high-mountain landscapes in the Southern Alps. Crossing the Bonette means reaching a summit few cyclists and hikers can add to their record.

The Col de la Bonette in 3D relief

In the Mercantour massif, on the borders of the Alpes-Maritimes and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Col de la Bonette is one of the most legendary climbs of the cycling calendar and of the great long-distance walks. The road, open only a few months a year, offers steady gradients averaging around 6 to 7% over more than 20 kilometres depending on the side, with over 1,500 metres of climbing. In racing, the Bonette has featured in the Tour de France and the Tour de l’Avenir. For hikers and trail runners, it is one of the iconic passages of the Haute Route des Alpes. The printed relief faithfully renders this distinctive topography: a pass opening onto broad high plateaus, surrounded by ridges and treeless slopes, with the summit rising still higher above the road pass.
